Things to do on Stradbroke Island
If you're looking for things to do on Stradbroke Island, there's no shortage of fabulous activities to go along with the outstanding natural beauty. We can recommend a range of activities to keep you occupied for any length of stay. Whether you're on the hunt for action, adventure or blissful relaxation, there's plenty to discover on stunning Stradbroke Island.
What the locals know, and you'll soon discover, is that Stradbroke Island boasts some of the best surf beaches in Queensland. Along the eastern shoreline, you'll find soft, white sands and kilometres of rolling surf. This is an ideal spot for surfing, swimming, kayaking, fishing or scuba diving. Looking to head further afield? Then don't miss a sailing or powerboat tour around the island and surrounding waters.
The western side of the island faces Moreton Bay on the mainland, with the calm bays and beaches here ideal for families with young children. There's great rockpools to explore. The long pier at the village of Amity on the northwestern tip of the island is where you're likely to encounter a pod of dolphins. They've been coming to shore most afternoons for as long as we can remember.
There's a resident koala population close to Amity town, so don't miss a chance to see our favourite national icon in a natural habitat (you can spot them in trees, in yards and even wandering across the road). Marine life is abundant around the island, and is best spotted from Point Lookout in the northeast. Pull up a pew, and you might be rewarded with the spectacular sight of whales, dolphins, turtles or manta rays that frequently come close to shore.
For wildlife, including an array of local birds, head inland to the wetlands area of lakes, lagoons and waterways. This region is recognised internationally for its ecological importance. Take a walk on one of the many trails, or join a tour to discover more about the flora and fauna of this unique region.
There are several walking and cycling trails across the island. Popular walking tracks include the Kaboora Trail in Blue Lake National Park, and the trail around the gorge at Point Lookout. The latter is also a good option for cyclists, and it boasts incredible views of the wide expanse of ocean. Bikes can be hired from Point Lookout.
With pristine beaches and an abundance of wildlife and natural bushland, North Stradbroke Island is the ideal destination to capture some truly magnificent photos. Whether you are a novice or earn a living from behind the lens, our island helps to get those creative juices flowing and has been the backdrop for some truly stunning imageries. A wide angle lens would be a benefit for those beautiful panoramic beach shots and a longer lens for capturing whales and wildlife in their natural habitat.

There are shops dotted throughout the island, and it's worth keeping an eye out for notice of the next Sunday market. The markets are held at Point Lookout, and are the perfect place to pick up a souvenir, or just admire the handiwork of local artisans. The North Stradbroke Island Historical Museum in Dunwich is an award-winning museum, and a great way to learn about the island's fascinating history. You'll also find art galleries in Dunwich, and at Point Lookout.
Straddie is a friendly and welcoming island, and it's an ideal spot if you're looking for pure relaxation. Fill your days with swimming and reading under a beach umbrella, and enjoy a leisurely meal in the evening. A Stradbroke holiday house gives you the great option of self-catering. Pick up supplies at Amity, Dunwich or Point Lookout, and fire up the BBQ or make the most of the house kitchen. When you feel like a break, there are a range of takeaways, cafes and restaurants close at hand.
So there's certainly no shortage of things to do on Stradbroke Island.
